“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be the unnecessary freezing of water.” – Carl Rainer
“Perimplantitis” is defined as the destruction of bone around an implant. Many authors have postulated the exact etiology of this disease process. Most agree it is a site specific infectious disease that contains the same micro biota one would find associated with periodontal disease. This demonstrates the need for patients with implants to get routine cleaning and exams.
Periodontal disease as well as perimplantitis is often symptomless. So, without any signs of problems patients will often neglect the routine maintenance, and by the time symptoms do occur there is little that can be done to salvage the situation. Having placed implants for over 27 years, I cannot stress the importance of routine cleanings and exams for those patients.
