I am frequently asked if it is possible to correct an overbite without surgery. The fact is that our office has been providing that service for 22 plus years. Correction of an overbite is a complex undertaking which requires skill, training, and an in-depth understanding of the etiology (cause) of this skeletal imbalance. In our office we provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan for the orthopedic correction of overbites. There is a huge volume of science-based research that delineates the bony, muscle, and soft tissue changes that occur when we orthopedically reposition a mandible (lower jaw) to its ideal relation to the maxilla (upper jaw) and the proper position of the condyles (lower jaw bones) in the glenoid fossae (skull bone). This procedure can be done on older patients 70 years plus, however can be performed in a shorter time frame with profound results on youths and adolescents. True mandibular growth will occur in the young growing individual, whereas in the non-growing adult, bony apposition and resorption occur.
