Placement of Implants

Dear Patients,

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Wayne Gretsky

Many patients have asked me about the one-day implants. Having surgically placed implants for over 26 years, and having been educated in implant dentistry by some of the most prominent clinicians, I look unfavorably on this surgical technique. The important thing to consider when discussing dental implants is the implant-bone interface. Almost all the implant authorities agree that the bone implant interface must be undisturbed for the 3-4 month period post placement. The consensus is that micro-movement at this interface will cause a fibrotic encapsulation of the implant instead of an osseous (bone) interface. Dr. Jack Lemmons (UAB) is a dental material authority, who strongly advises against immediate loading. Dr. Lemmons states “micro-movement prior to integration will cause implant failures in a much greater percentage that in the traditional technique.

My opinion is to wait the 3-4 months for the submerged implants(s) to integrate with the knowledge that this technique has a 95% success rate.
