Osteoporosis

Dear Patients,

Another year has come and gone and with it we hope for you a healthy, happy, and prosperous new year from me and my staff.

Osteoporosis is defined as the structural deterioration of bone tissue. This translates into a weakening of our bone and an increase in bone fragility as we mature. Osteoporosis affects 55% of people over the age of 50, 80% of them women. Many physicians are treating this condition with bisphosphonate therapy. These drugs have been associated with osteonecrosis of the jaw. This is an untreatable disease which can be fatal. I have been a strong advocate of alternative therapies for treating this disease.

Most research has found that for bone health it is important to get the daily recommended amount of vitamin D and calcium. I am recommending trying a supplement called “Bone Strength”. This contains 685 mg of complex organic calcium along with strontium silica, vitamin D, and trace minerals. In addition to that, research shows weight bearing exercise at least 4 times per week is extremely important in maintaining bone health. Research also shows it’s important to not smoke and avoid excessive alcohol consumption. I also recommend anyone over the age of 40 to get a bone density scan.

Should you have anymore questions regarding osteoporosis please visit the website NOF.org which is presented by the national osteoporosis foundation.

Have a Great Year!

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
