What causes a “gummy” smile?

Dear Patients,

Yippee! The snow has melted and spring appears to be around the corner. Let’s hope that LeBron and friends can bring the coveted NBA title to Cleveland.

Recently, I was asked what causes people to have a “gummy” smile. Although there can be a few different causes the predominant number of cases of excessive gums showing when someone smiles is due to maxillary vertical excess. This is a skeletal imbalance that can be corrected with appliance therapy followed by orthodontics. This is rarely the result of hyperplastic or excessive gingival tissues, and this condition is often misdiagnosed.

Should you or someone you love have a gummy smile please contact our office for a no cost consultation.

We are having a special promotion between now and May 31st, 2010. Any new patient referral will receive a $25.00 gift card to Carraba’s as well as the person who refers the patient. In order to receive the gift card please make sure the patient writes your name down as the referral source on our registration form.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
